Who issues work permits to foreigners in Poland?

Employers in Poland have the right to employ citizens of other countries within the territory of Poland. This is done based on a work permit issued by the territorial bodies of the central executive authority, namely by the Voivodeship Office for Foreigners or the Voivodeship Office.

The Urząd in Poland, as mentioned above, is an administrative body responsible for handling various bureaucratic matters for the population.

Functions:

  • Registration of citizens
  • Residential registration
  • Employment
  • Document processing (passports, visas, work permits, etc.)

Types:

Urzęds operate both for Polish citizens and for foreigners legally residing in the country. There are several types of Urzęds, each specializing in specific tasks:

  • Voivodeship Office (Urząd wojewódzki) – responsible for the registration and issuance of work permits to foreigners.
  • Commune Office (Urząd gminy) – responsible for registering and registering citizens’ residence.
  • Employment Office (Urząd pracy) – responsible for issuing employment permits and monitoring employment relations.
  • Social Security Office (Urząd zabezpieczenia społecznego) – responsible for managing social programs and disbursing benefits.

Structure:

Each Urząd is headed by a voivode (in the voivodeship office) or a mayor or wójt (in the commune office). They are responsible for managing the office and making decisions on citizens’ applications.

Urzęds play an important role in the daily lives of Polish residents and foreign citizens, providing essential administrative services.
